I was fortunate to spend four weeks studying Spanish at Escuela Montalban in January/ February 2026. The learning environment created at the college was extremely helpful in progressing my Spanish to much improved level. The small class sizes allowed for lots of interaction with the teachers and other students. The teachers were well qualified and skilled in making the classes informative and fun, often liberally dosed with humour.
We also had to the opportunity to dive into the richness of Andalusian culture and its history which added a whole other level to the learning experience.
The program I took allowed me to also have some private flamenco lessons which were super fun and a great form of exercise. The teacher paced the class well and was very encouraging and patient with me.
I also participated in one of the cultural activities offered in the evening, a tapas night, which was allowed me to meet with other students from all over the world and practice my Spanish in an informal setting.
I found the administration staff to be efficient as well as being very receptive and attentive to my needs, going out of their way to ensure I had a good experience at the college.
In summary I can heartily recommend the family at Escuela Montalban as a wonder-full place to learn Spanish and to immerse yourself in Andalusian culture!
Shaun,
Australia.
Hello Shaun, it was a pleasure to have you with us :) Hasta luego!!!
I spent 2 weeks learning Spanish intensively at Escuela Montalban with a mixture of group and private lessons. By the end of this time my Spanish had improved a lot thanks to the efforts of the great teachers and the resources they shared. The school also organised for me to stay with a local woman who was so kind and caring, and who really made me feel at home. I could practise what I learned in my classes with her which was a huge help. I can really recommend this school and hope to go back some day!
Quiero volver a usted!🫶🏽
Entonces hasta pronto 😀
I spent a wonderful week here just before Christmas. All of the staff are so friendly and welcoming and the teaching really is first-class. Funny I know, but I am addicted to language school holidays so I am in a good position to make a comparison - Escuela Montalban is really great. I learnt so much during the week. Thank you!
Thank you Steve for your review. It was a pleasure to have you with us. Feliz año nuevo y quizás hasta pronto :)
I spent a week at Escuela Montalban. I started with practically no Spanish at all.... And ended up with a much expanded knowledge of Spanish.... it's amazing how much they teach in a week...
The teachers, and everyone at the school are wonderful people, they really know how to make you learn.
There's extra activities outside of the school, trips and excursions. And you can pre-book activities such as tango and cookery lessons when you book your course.
I had tango lessons. Which were fabulous.
I stayed the week in a local family home, which was welcoming and fun.
And Granada is a beautiful chilled city.
My first time learning a language overseas and I would come back here again.
Hola Sam.
They offered us a course of B2, that at the end we will pass the exam and have the diploma of B2, unfortunately at end literally the last month they told us there isn’t much time to finish the course so you will pass only B1 (which isn’t our fault, they should’ve calculated the time better) and if you want b2 you can pay for more months. so expensive for nothing, it’s not even good. won’t suggest to anyone wanting to study spanish.
Hello Salma; our students don’t buy a certain Spanish level. They buy a Spanish intensive programme. You have taken a 24-week course, with a very irregular attendance. That means, that you only have managed to reach the B1 level of Spanish.
The document you have signed on the first course day specifies that if a student attends the course regularly, maintains a high level of interest and commitment during the learning process, he will be able to reach a B2 level of Spanish in that time. This is the objective that we as a school set ourselves together with the student's personal commitment. If course attendance and personal interest are not met, it is very difficult to achieve the final objective.
We do not sell levels of Spanish. We sell courses that aim to achieve objectives as long as certain conditions are met: regular attendance, interest and commitment to the course and a clear involvement in the learning process. These conditions have not been met by yourselve during the programme.
We are very sorry that a student, to whom we have personally devoted ourselves to try to attend to her interests and personal circunstances, has this opinion, which is not at all close to reality.
The language school Escuela Montalbán in the center of Granada is a cosy and matey place. It is situated in a small building on two levels with three small class rooms each. You get to know all the staff very quickly as there are about 15 people working here and some of them are – good for them – on holiday as it is high summer time at the moment.
The first and third week I took part in regular courses with only three students plus, of course, the teacher. We had two classes per day starting with a grammar class followed by a conversation class. The school’s administation goes to great length in organizing the courses concerning the students‘ language levels. They really strive to form courses consisting of people with a similar level of Spanish in order to make the classes effective and useful. I also took private lessons during one week which I can recommend because it is super-intensive and very effective when the teacher concentrates fully on you.
As far as I am concerned, I do not only study at this school but I also do an internship under supervision of Margret Fortman who is the school’s marketing and public relations manager. Therefore I review or write texts for the school’s website. I have to admit that these texts are in English or German (I am from Berlin) as my Spanish is by far not yet good enough for professional purposes.
When I arrived I was classified level A2 in Spanish, certainly an accurate classification in theory but in daily life I felt like level zero basically. That has significantly changed in only three weeks thanks to the lessons I took and thanks to the teachers that gave them. All teachers are professional, highly motivated, kind and funny at times, too.
As I enjoy biking a lot, I bought a bike second hand and so I am exploring the city and the countryside in my spare time. The landscape has flat terrain when you go along the river Genil that flows through the city into the plains and there are of course hills and the Sierra Nevada. A mountain range that goes up to about 3000 m (9000 ft). And for all of you who like biking, too or who are into a little challenge: To the second highest peak leads a path suitable for bikes with an average gradiant of only 5 percent.
The learning gradiant is for sure higher at Escuela Montalbán.
I took a week's Spanish conversation classes at Montalbán with one private afternoon conversation class too. I had two great teachers - I was in a group of eight in the mornings with Adela and we had good fun practising our conversation skills. We were all of a similar level in conversation and got plenty of directed practice time on the things we needed to progress. On one afternoon I had an hour and a half with Maria, purely to practise conversation which was enjoyable and helpful.
I found that Montalbán's strengths are the division of grammar and conversation which for me meant I could just choose to work on conversation which was what I felt I needed right now. It also allows people to be set into different level groups for conversation and for grammar so if you are much stronger in one area than the other you can work at your level for each subject. Some reviews have commented on the fact that the grammar sessions do not 'lead in' to the conversation lessons but this is why, so it depends what your priority is on this.
I did find that for a one week course Montalbán was quite expensive as there is a high administration fee which would be diluted if you were to book several weeks in a row. I have given it five stars and I will probably return at some point for another course.
:) Gracias
